We pick the top 3 Gourmet Vegetarian Restaurants in the city

Maybe a few years back if you told me you’re a Vegetarian, I’d definitely recommend you to stick to the traditional South Indian fare or the Rajasthani thali. Now however, with the gamut of restaurants in the city, you have a plethora of choices for your palette.

Surprisingly so, many non-vegetarian buffs do not mind converting for a night at these restaurants. I’m thinking far from the conventional margarita pizzas and chole bhatura, think molecular gastronomy and a fushion of flavours between east and west.

Here are our top 3 picks of gourmet Vegetarian in the city.

Burma Burma
Although Ankit Gupta’s Burma Burma opened almost 8 months back, the Kala Ghoda joint still requires well in advance reservations. I’m not entirely surprised to be honest; the delightful flavours and fusion Burmese delicacies make it worth the wait. Initially, I was not convinced as to how an all-vegetarian eatery would survive in our city, considering how we are a bunch of religious meat eaters; but Burma Burma has redefined conventional thinking. At Burma Burma, greens, grains, herbs, lentils and nuts are used in such a way that they shine, surprise and delight. If you happen to visit the diner, sample the Mandalay laphet thoke and ohn thamin.
Price: Rs.1500 for two people (approximately)
Address: Burma Burma, Kothari House, Allana Centre Lane, MG Road, Behind Mumbai University, Fort, Mumbai

spiceklubSpiceKlub
No more are Indian entrees about oily layers and unduly tangy flavours. Well located in Lower Parel, SpiceKlub boasts a delectable menu inspired by the art of molecular gastronomy. Street foods and mithais are plated as performance art. Dishes arrive in miniature table top coal tandoors and glass bowls with hollow chambers holding liquid nitrogen. There unconventional variety of appetisers brings a pang of fresh air to the otherwise mundane lot. Pav Bhaji fondue, deconstructed Vada Pav and Papdi Chaat will tingle your taste buds. In mains, sample the Dum Biryani and the Hazari Paneer Tikka.
Price: Rs.1900 for two people (approximately)
Address: SpiceKlub, 8A, Janta Industrial Estate, Opposite Phoenix Mills, Senapati Bapat Road, Lower Parel, Mumbai

Quattro
In a city where Mexican diners can rarely be spotted, Quattro the Italian-Mexican diner is warmly welcomed. Perfecting a blend of flavours and an eternal menu serving an array of dishes, Quattro has become quite a favoured choice amongst families. The Lower Parel diner makes a genuine attempt at placing the more interesting half of its cuisine somewhere in the vicinity of Mexico, sending out runny but still passable guacamole, habaner and corn salsas and creamy refried beans, all of which are heaped onto nubby tortilla chips; paired with rice and veggies in burritos; and smothered under blankets of spicy sauce.
Price: Rs.1400 for two people (approximately)
Address: Quattro, 7, Janta India Estate, Senapati Bapat Marg, Opposite Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel, Mumbai
