If you have recently strolled through the main streets of Peddar Road or the bustling by lanes of Bandra, you could not have missed the artistic graffiti and unconventional structures that emerge from the buildings and houses across the city. The month of November has seen the debut of the St+art festival in the city which is due to conclude at the end of this month. Artisans from different parts of the country and abroad have graced the city with their presence to add a little splash of color to the city.
Founded in Delhi, the St+art is a non-profit organisation that has begun to enthusiastically involve themselves in government policy making and initiating social intervention. Renowned artists – Ranjit Dahiya, Riyaz Amlani and Tarini Jindal are part of the esteemed foundation.
“Art should be democratic and for everyone. We wanted to add colour to an otherwise grey landscape without adding any marketing messages,” says the festival’s director Arjun Bahl.
With a month long calendar, filled with activities like murals, installations, performance and workshops, the purpose is to integrate the artists with the Indian street-art movement. Street-art is a unique form of expression and is situated in non-artsy contexts and spaces, thus giving way to a broader audience viewing.
See it for yourself next time you are in Bandra’s St. Jude Bakery and Kala Ghoda, until end-November.
