Review: A Zoroastrian Irani Pop Up “The Chef and His Grandmother ” at SodaBottleOpenerWala High Street Phoenix

I have always been fan-girling over the food at SodaBottleOpenerWala, the much loved quintessential Bombay Irani cafe and bar which always has a unique twist that keeps recipes relevant in today’s vastly diverse food landscape. Recently, SBOW High Street Phoenix has been serving an exciting menu titled “The Chef and His Grandmother” created by Chef Danesh Vakshoor – Chef de Cuisine, using some of the family recipes from his grandmother.

Lamb Chop

The menu has interesting offerings. We loved the tender and succulent Chicken Shish kebab. The skewered chicken marinated with yoghurt and spices was a big hit. In starters, the Koobideh kebab is lip-smacking chargrilled minced lamb with spices, herbs and finely-chopped onions definitely strikes a chord.
Mutton Adas Pollow

Going to mains, the Mutton Gormeh Sabzi is incredibly cooked mutton stew with spinach, cilantro, fenugreek and garden greens. Served with Noon bread, it tastes heaven. The Mutton Polow with mutton mince and lentils is also worth- trying.
Mutton Qeyme with Pollow

We had to love the irresistible Irani Falooda. For desserts, we had end it with the Mawa Cake and Parsi Dairy Kulfi which is BOMB of a dessert. After noshing on these delicacies, I felt that being exposed to these rare delicacies was like a breath of fresh air. Zoroastrian Irani food has a fair bit of overlap with Parsi food, but also has its own distinct offerings. We loved the nuance and detail, our meal packed in!
