Kebab Korner at the InterContinental takes you on an epicurean journey through India

The newly redone and revamped Kebab Korner at the Intercontinental Marine Drive threw open their doors on 28th July 2015. The iconic 44 year old restaurant is now a wonderful fusion of an ethnic and contemporary look. The first thing you experience as you enter the restaurant is a cozy, warm feeling just when your eyes fall on the view outside the windows that treat you to the expansive Arabian Sea with the sun’s rays shining down on the rippling waves. As we were led to our table for two by the window one cant help but notice the elegant and sophisticated décor that is stylish but at the same time subtle. The blue and grey upholstery with the Indian paisley design beautifully complimented the cream and wood tables and chairs. The displays on the walls are traditional with copper vessels and other ethnic pots and pans. A cluster of such vessels on the beam add an interesting dimension to the restaurant. At the far corner were lanterns and mirrors attached on a wall with water trickling behind it.

As we settled down and glanced through the menu, we were in for a pleasant surprise to see numerous vegetarian items on the list. Thinking of Kebeb Korner one would not expect too much vegetarian but Chef Ansari had ensured that the vegetarian eaters do not return disappointed. We were offered a sampling menu of vegetarian and non vegetarian starters and main course. We were served fresh orange juice to start off as they mentioned that sugar cane juice would soon be part of their drinks menu.

We were offered a dahi bhalla as compliments of the chef, a soft, small dumpling with curds and chutney.

The non vegetarian starter was a platter of three different kinds of kebabs, the prawns malai, the murg kakoori and the haleen kebab. An interesting mix of kebabs each having a distinctively different taste. The vegetarian starter was a Dahi bhalla on a bed of crispy fried spinach. This is recommended and worth a taste as the different flavours and textures assault your taste buds. The softness of the bhalla that melts in your mouth to the crispy fried spinach that offers the crunch and the chutneys and masalas make it an interesting dish. A platter of three baby naans with different fillings made a delicious starter. Already quite satisfied and full we still dug into the main course as it came dish by dish on our table. The Karaari Bhindi with the Hyderabadi Salaan was absolutely outstanding and a must have. The crispy fried bhindi and the Hyderabadi gravy is simply delicious. The baingan dish with imli was also interesting though it did not look too appetizing. This was accompanied with plain roti and jadibooti roti both with a generous slathering of butter! The non vegetarian main course was a fish preparation with curry, Raan biryani served with burnt garlic raita and a prawn preparation with a white sauce. The prawn was mouth watering and a special mention for the humble raita that added that zing with the burnt garlic.

Stuffed to our gills but still going strong we drooled over the dessert platter that had three mouth watering Indian sweets on it with a dash of raspberry sauce for presentation. Gulab jamun, Badam ki mithai and Mohantal, each one better than the other. We devoured it in no time satiated and happy with the delicious meal we had. Instead of the traditional way of serving after mint on the table there were jute gunny’s filled to the brim with sweets, and after mint which added a lovely traditional touch to the restaurant.

A meal for two, vegetarian or non vegetarian will come to approximately Rs 3,500 plus taxes.

With the finest of ingredients, and a twist to the old recipes that have come down generations, Chef Irshad Qureshi has managed to create magic with his dishes that awaken all your senses and take you through a culinary journey through India.
